Seesmic dev team news!

It’s been a crazy month at Seesmic and I’ve personally have been so busy that I’ve completely forgotten to update the blog - oops! Two big events have happened, well maybe three but I can save that one for another post.

Firstly, my colleague and friend from OSAF, Matthew Eernisse, started work as a Seesmic Developer January 16th - woo! man can that dude sling some AJAX love He will be working on the HTML/AJAX version of Seesmic’s client and also helping me with the Ruby implementation of the web front-end.

Secondly, and the more recent event, Critter has just joined the team! As soon as I heard news he was being laid-off from his “day job” I sent an email to Johann asking him to consider hiring Critter - next thing ya know he’s popping up in the dev chat room!

Man it’s going to be a fun Spring!

New features are live

Today Loic demoed Seesmic at DEMO 08 today and one of the main features that was shown was the new Thread feature. Basically on any thumbnail you will see a count that shows how many replies have been made to the thread that the thumbnail is a part of.

The amount of posting was crazy when the new version was rolled out - within an hour we were average 200 videos an hour and easily exceeded 300 for two hours straight!

Another new feature is more of the items in the profile are now live links - so the website item is a link now.

But by far the biggest feature is that the Flash client is both smaller and faster so it’s less painful to the browser environment.

The thread feature adds some new items to the returned JSON data - more on that later

change to the events bot

Johann requested I add to the events bot the ability to deliver RSS entries in the XMPP data payload, so I made some changes and added a new command.

The new command is “set” and right now it only has a single sub-command “payload”. Sending the command “set payload rss” will tell the bot that you want to receive event notifications with the data payload containing the RSS entry instead of the Atom entry.

Use “set payload atom” to set it back.

To see what commands the bot allows, add “events@jabber.seesmic.com” to your roster and then send it the command “help”.

RSS Feed changes

It turns out that some recent changes to the RSS feed made it no longer validate.

Looking at the validation errors I made some changes.

channel item was changed to

But they set it up to be at app2.seesmic.com instead of app.seesmic.com <br /> This broke the Jabber bot and both Kosso’s and Critter’s apps - all of which recovered quickly.</p> <p>The good thing is that this did help with some of the load issues as the server is now completely running standalone and it also enabled the N95 mobile interface.
